The 1911 Census recorded 285 people named McNiff in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 156 men and 129 women.

The McNiffs were heavily concentrated in Leitrim, home to 63.2% of them (180 people). Next came Sligo (36), Cavan (23), Roscommon (15) and Fermanagh (10).

Of the McNiffs whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.1% reading and writing against 75.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (29), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Bridget, Annie, Kate and Anne.

The most common occupation among McNiffs was farmer, 27.7% of them (79 people). Next came scholar / student (21.8%), general labourer (3.5%), domestic servant (2.8%) and farm labourer (1.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 30.5% of all McNiffs, followed by general labourers, domestic service and metal & engineering.
