The 1911 Census recorded 278 people named Farnan in Ireland; roughly one in every 16,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 134 men and 144 women.

Meath had the largest share of Farnans, 23.7% (66 people). Next came Dublin (44), Monaghan (37), Antrim (33) and Tyrone (28).

The average Farnan in 1911 was 33.1 years old, 33.4 for men and 32.9 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Farnan literacy in 1911
Of the Farnans whose literacy was recorded, 82.9% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 13.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.3% reading and writing against 80.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (23), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (26), followed by Bridget, Elizabeth, Ellen and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Farnan's census form was "Scholar"; 18.3% (51) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.2%), farm labourer (6.8%), general labourer (6.1%) and domestic servant (5.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.5% of all Farnans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Farnan?
Farnans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.2%).
