That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Hampton literacy in 1911
Of the Hamptons whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 2.3% could read but not write, and 17.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.3% reading and writing against 75.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (16), John, Thomas, William and Robert. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Jane, Annie, Elizabeth and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Hampton's census form was "Scholar"; 23.5% (63) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (9%), farmer (7.1%), metal worker / engineer (3.4%) and general labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 10.4% of all Hamptons, followed by agriculture, domestic service and metal & engineering.
What religion is Hampton?
Most Hamptons, 56.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (18.7%), Presbyterian (12.7%), Plymouth Brethren (3.4%) and Non-Conformist (2.2%).
