The 1911 Census recorded 260 people named Ervine in Ireland; roughly one in every 17,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 127 men and 132 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Ervines were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 63.1% of them (164 people). Next came Antrim (90), Cork (2), Dublin (2) and Galway (1).

The average Ervine in 1911 was 26.2 years old, 23.7 for men and 28.7 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ervine literacy in 1911
Of the Ervines whose literacy was recorded, 80.7% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 14.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.8% reading and writing against 78.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were George (12), John, Robert, James and David. For women it was Margaret (10), followed by Elizabeth, Mary, Maggie and Isabella.

The most common entry on an Ervine's census form was "Scholar"; 24.6% (64) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (5.8%), textile worker (4.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.5%) and farm labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.2% of all Ervines, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Ervine?
Ervines were predominantly Presbyterian (70%). The remainder were mostly Plymouth Brethren (7.3%), Anglican (6.9%), Protestant (5.4%) and Unitarian (5.4%).
