Men came out slightly ahead, 90.2% reading and writing against 84.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.2% of all Saundersons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.

The largest religious group among Saundersons was Anglican, at 42.9%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (37.8%), Roman Catholic (9.3%), Plymouth Brethren (4.2%) and Methodist (3.9%).
