The 1911 Census recorded 257 people named Butterly in Ireland; roughly one in every 17,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 135 men and 122 women.

The Butterlys were heavily concentrated in Dublin, home to 55.3% of them (142 people). Next came Louth (79), Meath (26), Cork (9) and Monaghan (1).

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.1% of all Butterlys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Butterlys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.4%).
