The 1911 Census recorded 255 people named Grattan in Ireland; roughly one in every 17,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 129 men and 126 women.

Down was Grattan country: 41.2% of them (105 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (53), Antrim (29), Offaly (15) and Laois (14).

The average Grattan in 1911 was 27.5 years old, 27.7 for men and 27.3 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Grattan literacy in 1911
Of the Grattans whose literacy was recorded, 79.8% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 16.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.8% reading and writing against 73% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Grattan common first names
The most common male names were James (16), Thomas, John, Robert and William. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Annie, Margaret, Agnes and Maggie.
Grattan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Grattan's census form was "Scholar"; 14.9% (38) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9%), farm labourer (6.7%), general labourer (6.7%) and textile worker (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.5% of all Grattans, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Grattan?
The largest religious group among Grattans was Anglican, at 44.3%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (35.7%), Presbyterian (9.4%), Protestant (6.3%) and Methodist (2%).
