The 1911 Census recorded 243 people named Branagan in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 125 men and 118 women.

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Branagan literacy in 1911
Of the Branagans whose literacy was recorded, 75.2% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 20.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.5% reading and writing against 71.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (20), Patrick, James, Peter and Joseph. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Catherine, Margaret, Agnes and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Branagan's census form was "Scholar"; 18.1% (44) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.9%), general labourer (4.5%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.1%) and farm labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14% of all Branagans, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Branagan?
Branagans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.3%).
