Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), general labourer (5%), domestic servant (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.8% of all Watkinses, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Most Watkinses, 53.1%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (42.3%), Non-Conformist (1.7%), Plymouth Brethren (0.8%) and Baptist (0.4%).
