Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Next came scholar / student (9.7%), domestic servant (5.9%), carter / driver / groom (2.1%) and clerk / office worker (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.5% of all Kemps, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and transport.

Most Kemps, 59.7%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (20.3%), Presbyterian (16.9%), Methodist (1.3%) and Congregationalist (0.4%).
