Christian in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 229 people named Christian in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 117 men and 112 women.
Counties with Christian in Ireland
Dublin was Christian country: 49.8% of them (114 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (39), Down (23), Kildare (17) and Galway (11).
Christian average age in 1911
The average Christian in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 26.7 for men and 33.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Christian literacy in 1911
Of the Christians whose literacy was recorded, 86.2% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 9.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Christian common first names
The most common male names were John (14), James, Thomas, William and Robert. For women it was Mary (14), followed by Elizabeth, Sarah, Annie and Jane.
Christian occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Christian's census form was "Scholar"; 18.3% (42) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (4.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.1%), clerk / office worker (2.6%) and dressmaker / milliner (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 5.2% of all Christians, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Christian?
Most Christians, 60.7%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (31.4%), Presbyterian (4.4%), Methodist (1.7%) and Baptist (0.9%).
