Brew in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 224 people named Brew in Ireland; roughly one in every 20,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 123 women to 100 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Brew in Ireland
The Brews were heavily concentrated in Clare, home to 50.4% of them (113 people). Next came Cork (37), Limerick (28), Wicklow (13) and Dublin (9).
Brew average age in 1911
The average Brew in 1911 was 29.9 years old, 28.9 for men and 30.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Brew literacy in 1911
Of the Brews whose literacy was recorded, 79.2% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 17.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Brew common first names
The most common male names were Michael (13), George, John, James and Thomas. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Bridget, Annie, Margaret and Catherine.
Brew occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Brew's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (45) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.3%), other maker / factory worker (4.9%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.1%) and sailor / dock worker (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.5% of all Brews, followed by manufacturing & trades, professional and retail & commerce.
What religion is Brew?
Brews were predominantly Roman Catholic (72.3%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (25%) and Presbyterian (2.2%).
