Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.5%), textile worker (8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4%) and general labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.1% of all Tweedies, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.

The largest religious group among Tweedies was Anglican, at 48.7%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (46.9%), Methodist (4%) and Roman Catholic (0.4%).
