The Crangles were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 65.8% of them (146 people). Next came Antrim (70), Louth (5) and Dublin (1).

The average Crangle in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 28.2 for men and 32.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crangle literacy in 1911
Of the Crangles whose literacy was recorded, 83.6% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 11.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.8% reading and writing against 79.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), William, James, Patrick and Robert. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Maggie and Mary Jane.

The most common entry on a Crangle's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (43) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.2%), textile worker (11.7%), farm labourer (3.6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.8% of all Crangles, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Crangle?
Most Crangles, 54.1%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24.3%), Methodist (10.8%), Presbyterian (5%) and Protestant (4.1%).
