That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Griffiths literacy in 1911
Of the Griffithses whose literacy was recorded, 81% could both read and write, 1.4% could read but not write, and 17.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.2% reading and writing against 78.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (12), William, Thomas, James and Edward. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Elizabeth, Jane, Martha and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Griffiths's census form was "Scholar"; 14.5% (32) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were other maker / factory worker (4.5%), metal worker / engineer (3.6%), general labourer (2.7%) and no occupation / dependent (2.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 5.5% of all Griffithses, followed by transport, manufacturing & trades and professional.
What religion is Griffiths?
The largest religious group among Griffithses was Anglican, at 48.2%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (33.2%), Presbyterian (8.6%), Methodist (3.2%) and Baptist (2.3%).
