Of the McFauls whose literacy was recorded, 83.9% could both read and write, 2% could read but not write, and 14.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.8% reading and writing against 81.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (19), John, Daniel, Charles and William. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Elizabeth, Agnes, Annie and Lizzie.

The most common entry on a McFaul's census form was "Scholar"; 17.1% (37) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.4%), farm labourer (6%), general labourer (5.1%) and textile worker (4.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.4% of all McFauls, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McFaul?
The largest religious group among McFauls was Roman Catholic, at 46.8%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (40.7%), Anglican (8.8%) and Methodist (2.8%).
