The McKeens were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 67.1% of them (143 people). Next came Down (33), Clare (25), Fermanagh (6) and Dublin (3).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.3% reading and writing against 75.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (20), William, James, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Annie, Sarah, Jane and Maggie.

The most common occupation among McKeens was farmer, 14.1% of them (30 people). Next came scholar / student (13.1%), textile worker (7.5%), general labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.8% of all McKeens, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is McKeen?
Most McKeens, 59.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (19.2%), Anglican (7%), Methodist (7%) and Congregationalist (1.4%).
