Men came out slightly ahead, 61.7% reading and writing against 58.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (12), James, Joseph, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Maggie, Annie, Elizabeth and Rose.

The most common entry on a Crossey's census form was "Scholar"; 18.8% (39) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (16.4%), farmer (4.8%), other maker / factory worker (4.8%) and general labourer (4.3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 22.2% of all Crosseys, followed by agriculture, manufacturing & trades and general labourers.
What religion is Crossey?
Crosseys were predominantly Roman Catholic (81.6%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (10.6%), Presbyterian (4.8%) and Methodist (2.9%).
