The 1911 Census recorded 206 people named Geelan in Ireland; roughly one in every 21,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 114 men to 91 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Leitrim was Geelan country: 36.9% of them (76 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cavan (29), Longford (27), Dublin (22) and Roscommon (12).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Geelan literacy in 1911
Of the Geelans whose literacy was recorded, 81.7% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 14.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.1% reading and writing against 80.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (17), John, William, James and Michael. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Bridget, Anne, Annie and Elizabeth.

The most common occupation among Geelans was farmer, 22.3% of them (46 people). Next came scholar / student (20.9%), farm labourer (5.3%), general labourer (2.9%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.2% of all Geelans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Geelan?
Geelans were predominantly Roman Catholic (84%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (15%).
