Service in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 205 people named Service in Ireland; roughly one in every 21,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 102 men and 101 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Service in Ireland
The Services were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 75.1% of them (154 people). Next came Derry (24), Down (22), Dublin (2) and Tyrone (2).
Service average age in 1911
The average Service in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 29.9 for men and 32.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Service literacy in 1911
Of the Services whose literacy was recorded, 81.6% could both read and write, 2% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 84% reading and writing against 78.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Service common first names
The most common male names were John (17), Robert, James, William and David. For women it was Jane (10), followed by Mary, Elizabeth, Lizzie and Agnes.
Service occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Service's census form was "Scholar"; 21.5% (44) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.2%), general labourer (4.9%), textile worker (3.9%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.1% of all Services, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Service?
Services were predominantly Presbyterian (77.1%). The remainder were mostly Unitarian (8.3%), Anglican (7.3%), Roman Catholic (3.9%) and Methodist (3.4%).
