That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Dobbs literacy in 1911
Of the Dobbses whose literacy was recorded, 75.9% could both read and write, 6.2% could read but not write, and 17.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.2% reading and writing against 71.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (14), James, George, Michael and Francis. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Bridget, Anne, Elizabeth and Annie.

The most common entry on a Dobbs's census form was "Scholar"; 12.9% (26) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.9%), general labourer (6.4%), clerk / office worker (4%) and seamstress (4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8.4% of all Dobbses, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and professional.
What religion is Dobbs?
Most Dobbses, 52.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (40.6%), Presbyterian (5.4%) and Methodist (1.5%).
