The 1911 Census recorded 197 people named Dooney in Ireland; roughly one in every 22,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 106 men and 91 women.

The Dooneys were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 53.3% of them (105 people). Next came Sligo (37), Mayo (19), Kildare (16) and Dublin (6).

Of the Dooneys whose literacy was recorded, 83.1% could both read and write, 1.6% could read but not write, and 15.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Dooneys was farmer, 24.4% of them (48 people). Next came scholar / student (24.4%), farm labourer (2%), carpenter / joiner (1.5%) and builder / contractor (1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.4% of all Dooneys, followed by building & construction, domestic service and retail & commerce.
