That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Men came out slightly ahead, 84.1% reading and writing against 79.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (14), John, James, Thomas and Joseph. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Bridget, Elizabeth, Anne and Julia.

The most common entry on a Moonan's census form was "Scholar"; 18.9% (37) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.7%), farm labourer (4.6%), textile worker (4.1%) and carpenter / joiner (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.4% of all Moonans, followed by textiles & clothing, building & construction and domestic service.
What religion is Moonan?
Moonans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.6%).
