The 1911 Census recorded 194 people named Tweed in Ireland; roughly one in every 23,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 96 men and 98 women.

The Tweeds were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 89.7% of them (174 people). Next came Derry (12), Armagh (5), Donegal (1) and Down (1).

The average Tweed in 1911 was 27.6 years old, 25.7 for men and 29.5 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tweed literacy in 1911
Of the Tweeds whose literacy was recorded, 75.8% could both read and write, 7.9% could read but not write, and 16.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.1% reading and writing against 74.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Tweed common first names
The most common male names were John (14), William, David, Robert and James. For women it was Mary (17), followed by Margaret, Jane, Elizabeth and Annie.
Tweed occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Tweed's census form was "Scholar"; 27.3% (53) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16%), farm labourer (5.2%), domestic servant (2.6%) and general labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.1% of all Tweeds, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and transport.
What religion is Tweed?
Tweeds were predominantly Presbyterian (80.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (12.9%), Roman Catholic (2.6%), Baptist (0.5%) and Methodist (0.5%).
