That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Toman literacy in 1911
Of the Tomans whose literacy was recorded, 67.4% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 29.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 71.6% reading and writing against 62.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (16), James, Patrick, Daniel and Joseph. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Catherine, Sarah, Margaret and Annie.

The most common occupation among Tomans was textile worker, 20.4% of them (39 people). Next came scholar / student (19.4%), farmer (7.3%), farm labourer (3.7%) and general labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 22% of all Tomans, followed by agriculture, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Toman?
Tomans were predominantly Roman Catholic (86.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.4%), Moravian (4.2%) and Presbyterian (0.5%).
