The 1911 Census recorded 191 people named Toye in Ireland; roughly one in every 23,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 97 men and 94 women.

The Toyes were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 55% of them (105 people). Next came Derry (44), Antrim (10), Mayo (8) and Tyrone (8).

The average Toye in 1911 was 30.6 years old, 30.1 for men and 31.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Toye literacy in 1911
Of the Toyes whose literacy was recorded, 69.1% could both read and write, 7.4% could read but not write, and 22.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 70.5% reading and writing against 67.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), Edward, James, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Sarah, Bridget, Ellen and Lizzie.

The most common occupation among Toyes was farmer, 19.4% of them (37 people). Next came scholar / student (11%), farm labourer (7.9%), domestic servant (3.7%) and general labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.3% of all Toyes, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Toyes were predominantly Roman Catholic (89.5%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (7.9%), Anglican (2.1%) and Baptist (0.5%).
