Church in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 190 people named Church in Ireland; roughly one in every 23,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 93 men and 97 women.
Counties with Church in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Churches, 18.9% (36 people). Next came Derry (28), Dublin (27), Kerry (22) and Cork (17).
Church average age in 1911
The average Church in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 30.1 for men and 28.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Church literacy in 1911
Of the Churches whose literacy was recorded, 78.7% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 17.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Church common first names
The most common male names were John (11), William, George, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Elizabeth (13), followed by Mary, Margaret, Sarah and Ellen.
Church occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Churches was farmer, 11.1% of them (21 people). Next came scholar / student (10.5%), farm labourer (9.5%), general labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.5% of all Churches, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Church?
Most Churches, 51.6%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (40%), Presbyterian (3.2%) and Methodist (2.6%).
