The 1911 Census recorded 190 people named Gawley in Ireland; roughly one in every 23,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 86 men and 103 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.3% of all Gawleys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and building & construction.

Most Gawleys, 54.7%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (15.3%), Presbyterian (14.7%), Salvation Army (5.8%) and Methodist (3.7%).
