The 1911 Census recorded 189 people named Geany in Ireland; roughly one in every 23,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 97 men and 92 women.

The Geanys were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 64% of them (121 people). Next came Kerry (53), Limerick (12), Dublin (2) and Antrim (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Geanys whose literacy was recorded, 79.5% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 15.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (17), Patrick, Michael, Daniel and Denis. For women it was Mary (20), followed by Bridget, Julia, Nora and Elizabeth.

The most common occupation among Geanys was farmer, 21.2% of them (40 people). Next came scholar / student (19%), domestic servant (5.3%), farm labourer (4.8%) and general labourer (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.5% of all Geanys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.

Geanys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.5%).
