The Gowdys were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 60.2% of them (112 people). Next came Down (48), Tyrone (13), Donegal (4) and Dublin (4).

The average Gowdy in 1911 was 26.0 years old, 24.6 for men and 27.0 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gowdy literacy in 1911
Of the Gowdys whose literacy was recorded, 75.3% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 20.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 76.2% reading and writing against 74% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (9), William, James, Samuel and David. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Sarah, Margaret, Mary Jane and Agnes.

The most common entry on a Gowdy's census form was "Scholar"; 16.7% (31) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (9.7%), farmer (4.3%), domestic servant (3.2%) and general labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 11.8% of all Gowdys, followed by agriculture, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Gowdy?
Most Gowdys, 62.4%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (22.6%), Methodist (8.6%), Non-Conformist (4.3%) and Congregationalist (1.1%).
