The Franceys were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 58.9% of them (109 people). Next came Monaghan (23), Cavan (22), Down (22) and Mayo (3).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Franceys whose literacy was recorded, 86.1% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 8.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (13), John, Thomas, David and Robert. For women it was Jane (6), followed by Annie, Maggie, Minnie and Mary.

The most common entry on a Francey's census form was "Scholar"; 24.9% (46) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (14.1%), farmer (10.3%), railway / tram worker (2.7%) and farm labourer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 17.8% of all Franceys, followed by agriculture, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Francey?
Franceys were predominantly Presbyterian (83.2%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (13%), Methodist (2.7%), Plymouth Brethren (0.5%) and Roman Catholic (0.5%).
