That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Hassards whose literacy was recorded, 86.7% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 9.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Robert (10), Alexander, John, Patrick and Thomas. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Sarah, Ellen, Elizabeth and Kate.

The most common occupation among Hassards was farmer, 20% of them (37 people). Next came scholar / student (18.4%), farm labourer (7%), seamstress (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.1% of all Hassards, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Hassard?
Most Hassards, 50.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (27%), Methodist (13.5%), Presbyterian (7%) and Non-Conformist (0.5%).
