The 1911 Census recorded 185 people named Mehigan in Ireland; roughly one in every 24,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 106 men to 79 women.

The Mehigans were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 93.5% of them (173 people). Next came Tipperary (7), Down (3), Dublin (1) and Kilkenny (1).

The average Mehigan in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 27.3 for men and 36.9 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Mehigan literacy in 1911
Of the Mehigans whose literacy was recorded, 82.1% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Mehigan common first names
The most common male names were John (18), Daniel, James, Michael and Denis. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Ellen and Hannah.
Mehigan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Mehigan's census form was "Scholar"; 24.9% (46) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.7%), general labourer (4.9%), farm labourer (2.7%) and railway / tram worker (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.5% of all Mehigans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and transport.
