The 1911 Census recorded 177 people named Joseph in Ireland; roughly one in every 25,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 150 men to 27 women.

Antrim had the largest share of Josephs, 16.4% (29 people). Next came Cork (23), Galway (20), Dublin (19) and Donegal (12).

The average Joseph in 1911 was 25.8 years old, 25.8 for men and 25.7 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Joseph literacy in 1911
Of the Josephs whose literacy was recorded, 84.5% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 11.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.1% reading and writing against 81.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (3), Bamford, George, Kelly and Lappin. For women it was Mary (3), followed by Elizabeth, Annie, Cissie and Delia.
Joseph occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Joseph's census form was "Scholar"; 20.9% (37) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (7.3%), farmer (4.5%), fisherman (4.5%) and metal worker / engineer (4.5%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 7.3% of all Josephs, followed by transport, textiles & clothing and agriculture.
What religion is Joseph?
Most Josephs, 64.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (14.7%), Presbyterian (13%), Jewish (3.4%) and Methodist (0.6%).
