That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Brewster literacy in 1911
Of the Brewsters whose literacy was recorded, 83.3% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 13.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 87.8% reading and writing against 79.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (16), James, Robert, William and Charles. For women it was Annie (4), followed by Mary, Alice, Elizabeth and Kathleen.

The most common entry on a Brewster's census form was "Scholar"; 13.8% (24) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6.3%), retired / pensioner (5.2%) and clerk / office worker (4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.2% of all Brewsters, followed by retail & commerce, retired & pensioners and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Brewster?
The largest religious group among Brewsters was Anglican, at 48.3%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (35.1%), Roman Catholic (10.3%), Plymouth Brethren (4.6%) and Methodist (1.1%).
