The 1911 Census recorded 171 people named Kelley in Ireland; roughly one in every 26,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 79 men and 91 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Kelleys, 17.5% (30 people). Next came Galway (17), Cork (16), Mayo (16) and Limerick (14).

The average Kelley in 1911 was 31.8 years old, 29.7 for men and 33.6 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Kelleys whose literacy was recorded, 78.8% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 17.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.8% reading and writing against 76.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), Patrick, James, Thomas and Daniel. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Elizabeth and Kate.

The most common entry on a Kelley's census form was "Scholar"; 13.5% (23) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.9%), general labourer (7.6%), domestic servant (7%) and farm labourer (6.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.3% of all Kelleys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Kelley?
Kelleys were predominantly Roman Catholic (84.8%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.7%), Methodist (1.8%) and Presbyterian (0.6%).
