The 1911 Census recorded 171 people named Roper in Ireland; roughly one in every 26,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 83 men and 88 women.

Donegal had the largest share of Ropers, 23.4% (40 people). Next came Antrim (28), Sligo (25), Dublin (21) and Westmeath (14).

The average Roper in 1911 was 25.7 years old, 24.5 for men and 26.8 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Roper literacy in 1911
Of the Ropers whose literacy was recorded, 75% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 19.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.1% reading and writing against 72.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Roper common first names
The most common male names were James (8), John, Michael, Charles and Martin. For women it was Bridget (6), followed by Catherine, Mary, Ellen and Margaret.
Roper occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Roper's census form was "Scholar"; 19.9% (34) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.9%), textile worker (7.6%), general labourer (4.7%) and domestic servant (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.9% of all Ropers, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Roper?
Most Ropers, 62%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (31%), Presbyterian (3.5%) and Congregationalist (1.2%).
