Keon in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 165 people named Keon in Ireland; roughly one in every 27,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 88 men and 76 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Keon in Ireland
Galway had the largest share of Keons, 24.2% (40 people). Next came Fermanagh (39), Leitrim (21), Donegal (15) and Dublin (11).
Keon average age in 1911
The average Keon in 1911 was 32.1 years old, 28.4 for men and 36.4 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Keon literacy in 1911
Of the Keons whose literacy was recorded, 75.2% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 21.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 77.8% reading and writing against 72.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Keon common first names
The most common male names were John (13), Patrick, Thomas, Michael and Francis. For women it was Bridget (8), followed by Mary, Ellen, Margaret and Mary Anne.
Keon occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Keon's census form was "Scholar"; 15.2% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.5%), farm labourer (9.1%), general labourer (3.6%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.6% of all Keons, followed by domestic service, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is Keon?
Keons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.5%).
