The McGroarys were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 91.5% of them (150 people). Next came Derry (4), Fermanagh (4), Tyrone (4) and Antrim (1).

Of the McGroarys whose literacy was recorded, 67.3% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 29.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 71.2% reading and writing against 64% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (15), John, Patrick, Denis and Michael. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Lizzie.

The most common entry on a McGroary's census form was "Scholar"; 22.6% (37) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.3%), farm labourer (4.9%), seamstress (4.3%) and domestic servant (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all McGroarys, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and building & construction.
What religion is McGroary?
McGroarys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.2%).
