Of the Derrigs whose literacy was recorded, 65.2% could both read and write, 5.8% could read but not write, and 29% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 66.7% reading and writing against 63.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (16), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Bridget, Anne, Annie and Catherine.

The most common occupation among Derrigs was farmer, 21.6% of them (35 people). Next came scholar / student (16.7%), farm labourer (4.9%), domestic servant (3.1%) and carter / driver / groom (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.8% of all Derrigs, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and public service & defence.
