The 1911 Census recorded 162 people named Scarlett in Ireland; roughly one in every 27,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 77 men and 85 women.

Fermanagh was Scarlett country: 31.5% of them (51 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (46), Down (12), Westmeath (9) and Derry (8).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Scarlett literacy in 1911
Of the Scarletts whose literacy was recorded, 81.1% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 15.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.3% reading and writing against 78.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (12), John, George, James and Robert. For women it was Elizabeth (8), followed by Margaret, Jane, Sarah and Ellen.

The most common entry on a Scarlett's census form was "Scholar"; 22.2% (36) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.5%), retired / pensioner (3.7%), domestic servant (3.1%) and general labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.7% of all Scarletts, followed by domestic service, retired & pensioners and general labourers.
What religion is Scarlett?
Scarletts were predominantly Anglican (84%). The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (8%), Presbyterian (3.1%), Methodist (2.5%) and Baptist (1.9%).
