Falloon in 1911 Ireland

The 1911 Census recorded 154 people named Falloon in Ireland; roughly one in every 29,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 80 men and 74 women.

Counties with Falloon in Ireland

Antrim was Falloon country: 35.7% of them (55 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (49), Armagh (35), Tyrone (11) and Dublin (4).

Falloon average age in 1911

The average Falloon in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 27.6 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Falloon literacy in 1911

Of the Falloons whose literacy was recorded, 83.8% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 13% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85% reading and writing against 82.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (10), James, William, Samuel and Thomas. For women it was Elizabeth (8), followed by Ellen, Sarah, Annie and Deborah.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.6%), textile worker (9.1%), general labourer (3.9%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Falloons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
