Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 13.3% of all Doweys, followed by agriculture, domestic service and retail & commerce.

The largest religious group among Doweys was Anglican, at 28.7%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (24%), Roman Catholic (20.7%), Protestant (7.3%) and Baptist (6.7%).
