The 1911 Census recorded 148 people named McTague in Ireland; roughly one in every 30,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 77 men and 71 women.

The McTagues were heavily concentrated in Leitrim, home to 71.6% of them (106 people). Next came Fermanagh (10), Cavan (9), Derry (8) and Monaghan (8).

The average McTague in 1911 was 37.0 years old, 35.7 for men and 38.4 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McTague literacy in 1911
Of the McTagues whose literacy was recorded, 59.2% could both read and write, 12.2% could read but not write, and 28.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 61.4% reading and writing against 57.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (18), Hugh, Thomas, Francis and James. For women it was Bridget (8), followed by Maggie, Mary, Mary Anne and Anne.
McTague occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among McTagues was farmer, 38.5% of them (57 people). Next came scholar / student (14.9%), general labourer (4.1%), farm labourer (3.4%) and metal worker / engineer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 41.9% of all McTagues, followed by general labourers, domestic service and metal & engineering.
