The Hefferons were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 62.8% of them (91 people). Next came Antrim (43), Down (5), Meath (4) and Galway (1).

Men came out slightly ahead, 83.9% reading and writing against 81.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (10), Thomas, James, Patrick and Pat. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Ellen.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.6%), farm labourer (4.1%), textile worker (4.1%) and general labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.7% of all Hefferons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Hefferons were predominantly Roman Catholic (85.5%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (11%) and Anglican (3.4%).
