The 1911 Census recorded 142 people named Heffron in Ireland; roughly one in every 31,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 66 men and 76 women.

The Heffrons were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 64.8% of them (92 people). Next came Antrim (39), Derry (10) and Meath (1).

The average Heffron in 1911 was 35.5 years old, 34.8 for men and 36.0 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Heffron literacy in 1911
Of the Heffrons whose literacy was recorded, 63.3% could both read and write, 8.6% could read but not write, and 28.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (12), Martin, Michael, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Bridget (16), followed by Mary, Kate, Sarah and Catherine.

The most common occupation among Heffrons was farmer, 32.4% of them (46 people). Next came scholar / student (15.5%), domestic servant (4.9%), textile worker (2.8%) and farm labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 34.5% of all Heffrons, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and transport.
What religion is Heffron?
Heffrons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.1%).
