Moon in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 140 people named Moon in Ireland; roughly one in every 31,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 71 men and 68 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Moon in Ireland
Derry was Moon country: 31.4% of them (44 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (20), Down (13), Cork (11) and Donegal (8).
Moon average age in 1911
The average Moon in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 30.1 for men and 29.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Moon literacy in 1911
Of the Moons whose literacy was recorded, 87.9% could both read and write, 1.4% could read but not write, and 10.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Moon common first names
The most common male names were John (9), Robert, James, George and James Thomas. For women it was Minnie (5), followed by Elizabeth, Mary, Kate and Rachel.
Moon occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Moon's census form was "Scholar"; 21.4% (30) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6.4%), general labourer (4.3%) and metal worker / engineer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10% of all Moons, followed by retail & commerce, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is Moon?
The largest religious group among Moons was Presbyterian, at 35%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.1%), Roman Catholic (14.3%), Methodist (10%) and Congregationalist (7.1%).
