Of the Halliseys whose literacy was recorded, 79.3% could both read and write, 1.5% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.8% reading and writing against 77.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Hallisey's census form was "Scholar"; 27.9% (38) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.2%), domestic servant (7.4%), farm labourer (7.4%) and general labourer (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.5% of all Halliseys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and building & construction.
