The 1911 Census recorded 133 people named Farrel in Ireland; roughly one in every 33,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 65 men and 68 women.

Longford had the largest share of Farrels, 21.1% (28 people). Next came Galway (20), Derry (16), Roscommon (9) and Dublin (7).

The average Farrel in 1911 was 32.1 years old, 35.3 for men and 29.0 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Farrel literacy in 1911
Of the Farrels whose literacy was recorded, 77.1% could both read and write, 1.5% could read but not write, and 21.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.1% reading and writing against 71.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Farrel common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (13), James, Michael, John and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Annie, Anne, Ellen and Mary Anne.
Farrel occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Farrel's census form was "Scholar"; 13.5% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (12%), farmer (12%), domestic servant (8.3%) and general labourer (6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.8% of all Farrels, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Farrel?
Farrels were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (3.8%) and Anglican (2.3%).
