Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.6%), metal worker / engineer (3.8%), clerk / office worker (2.3%) and farm labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.8% of all Agars, followed by domestic service, metal & engineering and textiles & clothing.

Agars were predominantly Anglican (80.2%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (7.6%), Methodist (6.1%), Christian Science (3.1%) and Roman Catholic (3.1%).
